Georgios P. Tsomis

Full Professor of Ancient Greek Philology at the Department of Humanities, School of Humanities, Democritus University of Thrace.
Internal Member of the Governing Council of Democritus University of Thrace.

Born in Aigio, Achaia, he studied Classical Philology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and pursued his doctoral studies at Goethe University Frankfurt on the monodic poetry of Sappho, Alcaeus, and Anacreon. He holds a Habilitation in Classical Philology from Goethe University Frankfurt with a Habilitation thesis on the poetry of the Posthomerica (3rd c. AD). His research and publications primarily focus on Epic and Lyric Poetry. He also works on the reception of Ancient Greek and Latin literature in modern and contemporary European literature, theatre, music, and film.

In parallel with his philological studies, he pursued advanced theoretical studies in Μusic in Greece and attended courses in Musicology at the University of Frankfurt. As both a musicologist and philologist, he collaborated in the field of dramatology for opera productions in German theatres. From 2010 to 2015 he served as academic advisor to the Concert Hall of Komotini. From 2015 to 2018 he worked as scientific advisor and dramatologist at the International Opera Studio of Patras (Regional Theatre of Patras). From 2016 to 2020 he organized, coordinated, and taught at the Summer School “Ancient Greek Drama as Performing Art” under the auspices of the Department of Greek Philology (Postgraduate Program) at D.U.Th.

From 2021 to 2023 he was the scientific coordinator of the Erasmus+ Program “Cultural Heritage and Gamification in Education”, aiming to raise awareness of cultural heritage through modern strategies and tools that promote the digital skills of today’s youth and the citizens of the 21st century. He has taught in the Lifelong Learning Programs of D.U.Th., including “Education and Certification in Teaching Greek as a Heritage Language for Diaspora Teachers” and “The Ancient Greek Lyre.”

Since January 2025 he has participated in the EMERGE Program— a university alliance funded by the Erasmus+ European Universities Initiative, aiming to create an innovative, sustainable, and socially responsible European Higher Education Area. Within EMERGE, he is a member of Work Package 8, which focuses on enhancing the university experience and promoting a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient campus.

In 2025, with the support of institutional, academic, and local authorities, he organized a symphonic concert of classical music at the Ancient Theatre of Maroneia, featuring the Studentenphilharmonie Tübingen and students of the University Orchestra of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.

Since January 2023 he has been an elected internal member of the Governing Council of D.U.Th. Since June 2024 he has also been a member of the Governing Committee and the Provisional Assembly of the new Department of Humanities at D.U.Th., serving as coordinator of the Undergraduate Program “Digital Applications in Arts and Culture.”
