Semiotics: Literary analysis and cultural interpretation

Thanasis V. Kougkoulos (Kougoulos) completed his primary and secondary education in Alexandroupolis and studied at the Department of History and Archaeology, University of Ioannina. He received his Ph.D. in Modern Greek Literature from the same university. He has published books, studies, and articles in Semiotics, Modern Greek Literature, Imagology, and Comparative Literature, and has presented papers at numerous national and international conferences (Greece, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, Romania, Albania, Latvia, Russia).

He has served as editor-in-chief of the literary journal Exopolis and is currently Scientific Director of the Thrace Literary Archive Department of the Ethnological Museum of Thrace – Angeliki Giannakidou. He is a member of the Hellenic Semiotic Society, the International Association for Semiotic Studies, the Hellenic General and Comparative Literature Association, the International Comparative Literature Association (ICLA), and the Hellenic Folklore Society.

Between 2008 and 2012, he taught Modern Greek Language and Literature at the Department of Modern Greek Studies, Trakya University (Adrianople/Edirne, Turkey). From 2013 to 2016, he taught in the postgraduate program Visual Culture of the Institute of Social Sciences (Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü) at the same university, as well as in the postgraduate program Language and Literature in Education at the University of Western Macedonia. He has also worked as a secondary school teacher of Greek Language and Literature and, from October 2017 to August 2022, as Laboratory Teaching Staff at the Department of History and Ethnology, Democritus University of Thrace.

Currently, Thanasis V. Kougkoulos is Assistant Professor of Semiotics, Literary Analysis and Cultural Interpretation at the Department of Humanities, Democritus University of Thrace. He also serves as Associate Educational Staff in the postgraduate program Creative Writing at the Hellenic Open University. For the academic year 2022–2023, he received the Excellence Award of the School of Classics and Humanities, Democritus University of Thrace, in recognition of his impact, social service, and academic participation. In 2025, within the framework of the “3rd Call for H.F.R.I. Research Projects to support Faculty Members and Researchers” of the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (Ministry of Development and Investments), in the Scientific Area SA7, Humanities & Arts, Category I, he was awarded funding as Principal Investigator for the research project Mapping the Greek City Mysteries of the 19th century.
