Short Bio: Persa Apostoli was born in Rhodes. She holds a B.A. and Ph.D. in Modern Greek Philology from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, and an M.A. from King’s College London. She worked as Adjunct Faculty at the Hellenic Open University (2003–2023), and has also taught Modern Greek and Comparative Literature for the Universities of the Peloponnese, Patras and Nicosia, as well as in Secondary Education. Since 2023, she has been serving as Assistant Professor at the Department of Greek Philology (as of 1 September 2025 Department of Humanities), at the Democritus University of Thrace. She has also participated in the following Research Programmes: “Modern Greek Literary Journals (1974-today)” (Centre for Hellenic Language, 2005), “Women’s artistic and literary activity in Greek Periodicals 1900-1940” (Athens School of Fine Arts, 2005-2007), «Cultural transfer and ‘national character’ in nineteenth-century Greek periodicals / Chrysallis) (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Department of Theatre Studies, 2012-2013) and “Cultural Mediators between Greece, France and other European Countries, 1830-1974” (Institute of Historical Research/ National Research Foundation, 2017-2022). She is a member of the Greek General and Comparative Literature Association and the International Comparative Literature Association. She has presented at Greek and international conferences, and her studies have been published in reputable Greek and international journals and edited volumes. She is the author of the monograph The Picaresque Novel and Its Presence in 19th-Century Greek Literature (Artemis, 2018), and has served as the scholarly editor of the following volumes: Marietta Giannopoulou-Minotou, The Authentic Story of Pope Joan (Periplous, 2011); Alexandra Papadopoulou, “Death Abroad” and Other Short Stories (Artemis, 2020); Andreas Karkavitsas, Short Stories (Syllogos pros diadosin Pfelimon Vivlion, 2025)
Research Interests: Modern Greek prose fiction and critical discourse (19th–21st century); comparative literature; Greek periodical press; women’s literary activity
