Salakidis Georgios

George Salakidis studied Classical Philology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Turkish Studies at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich. His research interests include Ottoman literature and palaeography, Ottoman history, and modern Turkish literature. He teaches in the Department of Humanities at the Democritus University of Thrace in Komotini. He completed his doctoral dissertation titled “Larissa in the mid-17th century based on Ottoman Sharia court documents from the years 1650–1652,” which he submitted to the Department of Translation and Interpreting at the Ionian University in Corfu.
In his books — Sultansurkunden des Athos-Klosters Vatopedi aus der Zeit Bayezid II. und Selim I. Kritische Edition und wissenschaftlicher Kommentar (Thessaloniki 1995), The Sultan’s Documents of the Municipal Library of Kozani (Kozani 2004), The Province of Servia in the 16th Century through Ottoman Sources (Thessaloniki 2013, co-authored with K. Kampouridis), and Central Greece in the 15th Century: The Unpublished Ottoman Register of 1485 (Thessaloniki 2014, co-authored with G. Theocharidis) — he explores various social and economic aspects of Ottoman history.
He translated into Greek the novels Beyaz Kale by Orhan Pamuk (Athens 2005) and Nur Baba by Yakup Kadri (Thessaloniki 2011). He also published a Greek translation of Beng ü Bade by Fuzuli, accompanied by an introduction and commentary (Thessaloniki 2019). Together with Börte Sagaster, he co-authored A History of Modern Turkish Literature (Nicosia 2019).
