Teaching of History

Angelos Palikidis is Professor of History Didactics at the Democritus University of Thrace, Greece, director of the Lab of Technologies, Research & Applications in Education, board member of the International Society for History Didactics, managing editor of the “International Journal of History Education and Culture”, convenor of The Lausanne Project, and expert of the Observatory on History Teaching in Europe. As expert of the Council of Europe he is co-author of the publications “Shared histories for a Europe without dividing lines” (2014), “Quality history education in the 21st century. Principles and guidelines” (2018) and the “General Report on the State of History Teaching in Europe” (2023). He also drafted the “Report on History Teaching at Regional Level” on behalf of the Congress of Local & Regional Authorities (2025). He was head and principal investigator of the research projects “Shared histories for a Europe without dividing lines” (2016), “Digital Thrace: Mapping the history and the culture of the region with a view to improving the tourism product” (2020-3) and “Refugees from East, Migrants to the West” (2023-5). Currently he is running the project “From Historiography to Education: Shared Perspectives in Modern Greek and Ottoman History” (HistorEdu, 2025-8) and is taking part in the Joint History Project 2.0. His research is focused on teaching local and regional history, digital history and A.I., history curricula and textbooks, public history, historical memory and culture, and sensitive topics in formal and non-formal education. He is organizing workshops and webinars with teachers and students.
