Stavros Kiotsekoglou was born in Alexandroupoli and studied in the Department of History and Archaeology of the University of Lecce, Italy. In 2016, he took a Master’s degree in Visual Culture at Trakya University in Edirne (Adrianoupoli) and completed a doctorate in The Theory and History of Culture at the Neofit Rilsky University in Blagoevrad, Bulgaria in 2018. From 1996 he has worked as member of the Specialised Technical and Laboratory Staff of the Department of History and Ethnology of the Democritus University. He served in the Paleography Laboratory and from 2016 has been employed in the Laboratory of Folklore and Social Anthropology. Since 2016 he has been part of the Folklore and Social Anthropology Laboratory of the said Department. From 26/4/2022 he joined a position of Laboratory Teaching Staff (E.ΔΙ.Π.) (Government Gazette Issue B 2045/26.4.2022) in the same laboratory with the knowledge subject “Topography and Anthropology of Prehistoric Thrace” (Government Gazette Issue B 2975/05.05,2023). He has taken part in excavations at Grotta Poesia at Melendugno in the province of Lecce, at Vaste, in Apuglia, and in Otranto. He has also worked on excavations in northern Greece and on Karpathos and surface surveys at Anthropograva near Klimatia on Corfu.
He is currently collaborating with Prof. Carl P. Ruck, of the Department of Classical Studies, Boston University, on matters regarding mystery religion in Thrace. He is also on the academic committee of the journal Aeropos. He has published articles, given papers at conferences in Greece and abroad.
His research interests include: surface survey work for the location of various types of sites in Greek Thrace, to shed light on the history of the Thracians through study of their behaviour and the various manifestations of their intellectual, social and ethical life.
