Evangelia Thomadaki is currently Professor of Theoretical Linguistics at Democritus University of Thrace, School of Humanities.
She graduated from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (1984), completed an MA in Linguistics at the University of Cologne (1987) and received her PhD from the N. & K. University of Athens (1995) (PhD thesis: Morphologika provlimata tis Neoellinikis: I klisi ton ousiastikon [Issues in Modern Greek morphology: noun inflection]). Her published work includes monographs, contributions to volumes and linguistic journals, edited volumes, papers in conference proceedings and a coauthored pedagogical grammar.
She has taught at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (1996/97 – 1998/99 as a Teaching Staff member (on secondment from her high – school position) for the Interdepartmental Post Graduate Programm on Teaching Greek as a second/foreign language and 2002-2003 as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Linguistics, Department of Preschool Education,) and at the University of Crete (1998/9 – 2001/2, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Linguistics, Department of Philology), prior to her appointment (in 2003) as an Assistant Professor of Theoretical Linguistics at the Democritus University of Thrace, Department of Language, Literature and Culture of the Black Sea Countries.
Main research areas: grammatical structure and in particular, morphology and morphophonology (inflectional paradigms, allomorphy, defectiveness, grammatical gender, pluralia tantum, derivational patterns, productivity, compounding), morphology in first language acquisition (diminutives, compounding, lexical development), grammaticalization, second/ foreign language acquisition and learning/teaching, typology (research on adjectives), comparative linguistic research, language contact in the Balkans and language change.
